Error Handling (again!)

I’ve just switched mobile phone provider, from O2 to Orange. Now that the transfer has completed I thought I’d go and see what account services Orange offers it’s customers.

After about 1/2 hour of trying to register — involving timeouts (I’m on a 256k leased line here!), error messages saying the system was down, then it was back up, then it was down — the system finally let me sign up and log in.

First impressions seem good. I can check my inclusive call time and text message allowance, pay online, the usual. However, the build of the site isn’t so good. Forms submitted using javascript, inconsistent text sizes causing input elements to jump around, and then we have this little beauty of a recursive error:

Error Unknown error number:
We are sorry you have encountered this problem. At the moment we are unable to establish the exact cause but if it re-occurs, please make a note of the error number and contact customer services via email at: *********@orange.co.uk. Please enclose details of the circumstances which caused the error.

So I have to take note of the non-existent error number, and then give it to Orange Customer Service? That makes perfect sense.

Beware The ‘Spacker’

The latest issue of RISKS has a link to an article on Wired, about crackers who are working with spammers, providing them with services such as cloaked hosts, to thwart the efforts of anti-spammers.

Whilst this is a pretty disturbing trend, what’s more disturbing is the name Wired has decided to give to these guys:

Spackers”…

okaaay…

If you grew up in the U.K. during late 70’s/early 80’s you’ll know why I’m sniggering.

I think I’ll start calling spammers “Joeys”.

Linux User Tries Windows XP

Roblimo spends a week with Windows.

My copy of Windows XP Pro seems to have a program included with it called ‘Windows Messenger’ that, as far as I can tell, is some sort of ad delivery mechanism.

Distractions Needed

It’s been one of those weeks. You know the ones that start off odd, swing past stressful, pay a quick visit to WTF OMG! and end up with you feeling confused. Of course it’s only twenty past two on Friday afternoon, so there is the possibilty of a visit from the Happy Fairy, but I’m not counting on it.

So in the cause of general distraction I present you with, A String Quartet Tribute To Weezer. Thanks to David P for that little gem.

And do yourself a favour, get the new Cooper Temple Clause Album, Kick Up The Fire, And Let The Flames Break Loose. Absolutely first class.… it’s good to be excited about a band again after so long.

Microsoft confirms changes to Internet Explorer

Microsoft have confirmed the changes that they’ll be making to Internet Explorer after losing the case to Eolas.

Details of the new user experience are available at MSDN. Apple have also posted a page outlining the changes. Basically it looks like all externally referenced content that is pulled in through ActiveX controls will now have a confirmation popup by default.

Mezzoblue has a little summary on the fallout of this. (as an aside I forgot how nice looking that site is!). Cheers for the pointer sniffles.
