Government Computing 2003

I’m going to be away for most of next week as I’m giving a talk at the Government Computing 2003 conference. I’ve been asked to talk about Open Source software: what it is, how it works and the opportunities for the public sector. Basic stuff, but it’s going to be a chance to get OS in front of some big players in Scottish government and the public sector.

I’m going to try and keep this place updated with how things are going and maybe get some photos up (depending on the connection at the hotel) from the conference and around Edinburgh.

The conference takes place at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on the 4th and 5th of November and is free to the public and not-for-profit sector.

Web Design Practises

http://www.webdesignpractices.com

This is a new site on the block, that grew out of Heidi Adkisson’s Master Thesis “Identifying De-Facto Standards for E-Commerce Web Sites”.

It’s aim is to help designers and developers to understand and identify some of the ‘de-facto’ standards that we use on the web today.

That’s not to say these are “THE RULES!”, as Heidi herself explains on the about page:

“The data presented on this site are intended to inform design decisions, not dictate them. Common practice does not necessarily equate with best practice—and the relationship between consistency and usability on the Web is remains a lightly researched area. A goal of this site is to encourage and highlight related empirical research. You’ll find throughout the site links to related studies.”

Lots To Say, Lots To Do

Busy day today, so here’s a list of stuff that you may not know about yet:

The Xforms stuff looks really good. I’ve been following it for a little while now, but have never had the chance to actually write any code. Soon hopefully.
